As the swim season officially begins, new research from a USA Swimming study by the University of Memphis has been making headlines about swim skills and drowning rates. These statistics show that drowning is the second leading cause of death among youth 14 and younger. According to the Florida Department of Health, the state of Florida, with its numerous bodies of water, has the highest incidence of drowning over any other state. The USA Swimming study also revealed that the key indicator of swim ability is not necessarily race but is parental influence; thus children whose parents are not swimmers are eight times more likely to be non swimmers themselves.

As part of a six-month, 48-state tour, the Fight Back Express bus will kickoff its Florida tour with  stops in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, carrying the message, “If one person can battle cancer, a nation can rise up and defeat it.”  The tour, sponsored by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), is highlighting the crucial role elected officials play in making cancer a national priority.

Cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, their families and all supporters will hold a rally to welcome the ACS CAN Fight Back Express, a mobile action center where visitors can share their story with their elected officials through the electronic “Picture A Cure” program and sign the bus as a show of support for making cancer a top national priority.  We invite everyone to join in the fight against cancer with your voice.
