Sheriff Wants Animal ControlSo the sheriff wants to take over animal control because "his deputies are usually the first to respond..." His deputies are usually the first to respond in law enforcement cases involving severely mentally ill people who commit a "crime" such as loitering or trespassing too. He has not provided the training or incentives to ensure the mentally ill are treated properly and/or taken to appropriate community resources. He has not provided psychiatric care in the jail for the last eight months. This is the sheriff's legal duty. And now he wants to take over animal control? Must be an election coming up. I didn't vote for him but have been impressed by some changes that have already come about under his command. No nonsense approaches and doing what he truly believes is what is needed. Apparently his approach has put some folks off (those within his own ranks) but hey, change brings that about for a lot of people. I'm told that he isn't real easy to work for and he isn't one to compliment an employee on a job well done. He expects great things from his employees and won't accept anything less. IF he runs again, I just might vote for him then. I'll reserve my decision at that time and keep my ear to the ground in the meantime. I cannot speak to what you have alleged to be "fact" when speaking about lack of mental health services within the jail. Animal Control has been a "problem" for a number of years. Mismanagement is nothing new. Funding has always been a huge issue. IF the Sheriff believes he can provide this service to the community, I would agree to allow him that opportunity on a temporary basis until it is PROVEN that he indeed CAN make it work. I'd like to hear the Sheriff address the accusations noted here and the reasons for the lack of services you have mentioned first though, if in fact what you aledge is a "fact". |

I agree that we need an enormous amount of help with the situation of management and operations of a County Animal Control Facility. But, as earthmother points out, the Sheriff Department already has obligations that have not been addressed. Response time to calls for service for regular police services is suspect and I'm not so sure he wants to point out that "his deputies are usually the first to respond." It may be forty minutes later but being "first" just does not make it commendable. How about addressing the current pressing issues that he has under his authority at this time. Then, if our community and elected leaders have still not found a solution, he could lend his energies to finding a solution.
