What's Happening in the Westside Republican Club

Westside Republican Club News

As members of Greater Nassau Chamber of Commerce, we joined them on a trip to Tallahassee for a Chamber sponsored Legislative Day.  Eleven chamber members traveled to the Capital to meet with the Board of County Commissioners’ lobbyist as well as Rep. Aaron Bean and Senator Steve Wise.  A list of members top 3 concerns was presented to our legislators.

The Club also participated in the West Nassau Relay for Life, April 11-12 raising over $3900.  Fifteen team members worked hard to promote awareness and cancer research.

On April 16, Club members were invited to join other community leaders for NE Community Leader day in Tallahassee, sponsored by Rep. Bean.  We joined him for a luncheon where Majority Leader Adam Hasner and Majority Whip Ellen Bognanoff spoke.  Other speakers included Representatives from the Tampa Bay area and Palm Beach.  All speakers let us know how fortunate we are to have a person of Rep. Bean’s caliber representing us.  Over 2500 bills are introduced each year—both sides of the aisle easily agree upon 95% but 5% are a challenge.  Rep. Bean has the reputation of being able to work with both, “loving the person but hating the bill.”  Term limits will take him from the House but look for him in 2010 in a run for the Senate—Sen. King will be subject to term limits at that time.  Rep. Bean is a resource that the State can’t afford to lose.  Governor Charlie Crist closed our trip with a briefing.

Mark your calendars—May 6, at our regular meeting, Supervisor of Elections Vickie Cannon will be our speaker and will have the new voting machines with her.

The Club will have a booth during the Railroad Days celebration in Callahan, May 30-31.  Local candidates will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.  Also available will be voter registration forms.

July 19 the Club is sponsoring a Candidate Rally at the Multipurpose Building in Callahan.  All candidates, national, state, and local have been invited to participate.  Food will be available and door prizes.  Remember the last day to register to vote in the primary is July 28.  Come meet the candidates prior to the primary.
