Just what is going on with college football this season?

If anyone has Jeff Bowden’s new phone number, I need it.

This game was served up to Miami better than a steak at Ruth’s Chris. It really feels like a bad episode of Punk’d. I actually started chanting, “Overrated,” but I do not think anyone realized I was talking about Jimbo Fisher and not just a drunken lunatic who did not know that the teams playing were unranked. No, I am not turning on him yet, but so far he has not been the miracle we were hoping for.

So what now? What can FSU possibly salvage from this? All we can hope for now is to pitch a few upsets.
Luckily with all of the Top 10 upsets, we have been able to slide off into the shadows without a lot of attention. Surely I am not the only one wondering what is going on with college football. If the push for a playoff system is not felt after this year, then it probably never will.

There have been more huge headlines than in the past 10 years. South Florida’s version of the Running of the Bulls, Michigan’s embarrassment, all the preseason Top 10 teams now with at least one loss, more Cinderellas than Disney World and where does that leave us? Personally, it leaves me wanting to start over. Rankings mean nothing, spreads are just random guesses and dynasties, as you know them, are a thing of the past.

It makes me feel good because FSU was the last true dynasty, possibly of all time. After I graduated in 1999, FSU had a streak of top four finishes, bowl appearances, and more team records then I can list in this article.

Some teams have hit strides, but the glory days for USC, OSU and others are long gone, I am afraid. Athletic directors, boosters, school presidents and, most of all, fans are going to have to be more understanding and patient. Coaches like Kentucky’s and Kansas’ were almost fired and now their teams are some of the best in the nation.

The only thing I can figure is that if I were a coach right now, I would have to consider a job in the WAC or some other conference where you do not get a ranked team every week. You could still build a great team because the number of talented prospects is the highest it has ever been.

I am not even sure who we play next. I do not even think it matters. I know who we have left to play and, quite frankly, I do not think we will receive a bowl bid and probably will not even have a winning record. Two games could salvage our season: an upset of Boston College and Florida. Although I think that any win from here on out would be an upset.

This weekend I will be in Jacksonville, feeling confident in a Gator victory. I will be the one wearing an Auburn hat and an LSU T-shirt just to keep it real. Go Dawgs!
