Amelia Island Film Festival Wraps

While most people think of sun-baked beaches and charming historic
homes when they think of Amelia Island, there was much more to this
quiet little spot this past week.

Amelia Island turned into a “festival island” last weekend as
hundreds of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, directors, actors,
producers, fans, and more turned out to be part of the Inaugural
Amelia Island Film Festival. The festival ran September 25 - 28, and
lacked nothing in the way of variety: everything from short
documentaries to comedy to musicals, to sci-fi gore graced the silver

Exciting New Art

Artists come from many different places and life experiences. This is what makes for the variety and excitement of a gallery that represents a large number of artists. The Island Art Association is one such gallery, representing dozens of artists that currently live in Nassau County. This month, the gallery begins showing the work of five new exhibiting artists on its walls. Click here to see a sample of each artists' work.

Jackie Humes Davis works in pastels and has obviously been influenced by her many years in Australia (where she served as a Welfare Officer in a men's prison) and then Hilton Head, where she won awards and recognition for her art. She has studied art in her home state of Maryland and in Hilton Head.
Sherry Ferber has also been a social worker and vocational rehabilitation consultant before her life as an award winning watercolorist. She has studied art both in the U.S. and in South Africa.
Ann Kemp left Connecticut to get her Masters (in social work) at FSU. She worked for the State of Florida and lived in Tallahassee for many years. Ann now concentrates on nature photography, often working from a kayak in our marshes and inlets.
Melva Smith Richman came to our area from New Jersey, where she was a school supervisor and department chair for art. Melva has exhibited her work for many years as both a painter and fiber artist. Her tapestries are known for their portrayal of nature.
Karen Trowbridge is a pastel and collage artist. Sometimes using unique materials, her work has provided surprising results. She received much of her art training in Boulder, Colorado and her art often portrays the landscapes of that area.
Visit the gallery soon to see the works of these artists and all the other exhibiting members.

Island Art Association volunteers at the Council on Aging

By the Island Art Association

Participants at the Council on Aging create original designs in a class taught by volunteers from the Island Art Association. Volunteers from the non-profit co-op have been providing a monthly program in painting and crafts for interested Council on Aging participants for several years. Approximately a dozen Council folks gather in the community room of the Council on Aging on Baptist Hospital Drive, off Lime Street, on the third Thursday of each month for the art activity.

Charter member Georganna Mullis recently taught a lively session featuring the painting of palm trees. In July’s session on portraits, artist Paul Massing created a drawing of one of the program members. But it’s not just painting and drawing.

Various media comprise the Island Art Association volunteers’ programs. In the past several months, IAA volunteers have facilitated mosaics with tiles and painted china, collage, portrait drawing, and construction of two-dimensional designs featuring natural materials. Encouraging close observation of surroundings, these creative projects are designed to support positive changes in mental outlook and self-awareness.

In keeping with their mission of serving art and artists in Nassau County, the Island Art Association seeks creative opportunities to foster art in the community.
Another free community art activity is offered monthly on Saturday mornings for elementary age children, at the co-op Gallery at 18 N. 2nd St. Pre-registration at 261-7020 is required for this hands-on class taught by Island Art Association members.
